Staff presented seven new board policies that the board voted to adopt. Staff explained that two student policies respond directly to Assembly Bill 3216 (passed in 2024): a conduct policy requiring rules for student cell‑phone use by July 1, 2026, and a separate mobile communication device policy outlining when and how smartphones may be used on campus with exceptions for emergencies and IEPs. A policy addressing response to immigration enforcement was presented as aligned with the attorney general's 2024 guidance, and a separate policy addresses supports for married, pregnant and parenting students (excused absences, lactation accommodations, child care referrals).
Board members asked about consequences and implementation in juvenile/community schools and staff explained how the policies would be included in annual notifications and program packets. The board adopted the full package by voice vote.
