Nutrition director: all students currently eligible for free meals; district using 10 Cent Grant and hydroponics

Angela Davis, Supervisor of Nutrition Services, told the board that currently all students have the ability to receive free meals funded by the State of Michigan and presented a three-year meal-count comparison showing a significant increase. She reviewed USDA guideline changes for whole grains, calories, sodium, fat and sugar, described meal components by age group, and noted the district’s third-year participation in the 10 Cent Grant to buy Michigan-grown produce and dried beans.
Davis also said Nutrition Services funded hydroponic growing stations at STEAM and Visions; those stations will be incorporated into curriculum and the produce used in the cafeteria. Board members asked questions and Davis agreed to provide additional responses after the meeting.
