During the Jan. 29 Committee of the Whole meeting, President Geoffrey Rose moved to convene a closed session to consider an attorney‑client privileged communication under Section 8(1)(h) of the Michigan Open Meetings Act. The motion, seconded by Valerie Bury, failed on a roll call recorded in SEG 002: Rose Yes, Bury Yes, McCray Yes, Wittorp No, Aburto Cortes Yes, Simmons Gaines No (4 ayes; 2 nays).
Later in the meeting, following a recess, the board voted to convene to closed session under Section 8(1)(a) of the Open Meetings Act for a periodic personnel evaluation. That motion carried on a unanimous roll call (6 ayes; 0 nays) at about 7:00 p.m.; the board reconvened from closed session at 7:49 p.m.
The minutes record the statutory bases for the two separate closed‑session motions but do not disclose the content of the attorney‑client communication or the personnel evaluation (the latter is by statute a permitted closed‑session subject). No further public action or outcomes from the closed sessions are recorded in the minutes.
