Geoffrey Rose elected president as Covert Public Schools board organizes for 2026

Geoffrey Rose was elected president of the Covert Public Schools Board of Education for 2026 after roll-call voting during the board's regular meeting on Jan. 12.
Superintendent Joe Allen opened nominations. Aaron Wittorp nominated Dorreon Simmons Gaines; Cheryl McCray nominated Geoffrey Rose; and Veronica Aburto Cortes nominated Valerie Bury. Roll-call voting gave Geoffrey Rose four ayes to Dorreon Simmons Gaines' three ayes, electing Rose president. President Rose then presided over the remainder of the meeting.
The board also elected Valerie Bury as vice president, Cheryl McCray as secretary and Alan Smaka as treasurer. Nominations and roll-call results were recorded for each office: Bury won the vice-presidential vote with four ayes; McCray won the secretary vote with four ayes; and Smaka won the treasurer vote with four ayes. The slate of officers will serve as the board's leadership for 2026.
