Board explores using adult school and college partnerships to expand certification pathways

Trustees and staff spent a portion of the workshop discussing how the district could leverage adult education and local community colleges to expand student access to industry certifications and middle-skills training. Board members asked whether students could earn medical assistant, CNA or phlebotomy credentials before graduation and how age limits might constrain some pathways.

Presenters said partnerships with Palomar and MiraCosta colleges already exist for dual enrollment and that adult school programming could be aligned or rebranded to reduce perceived barriers for younger students. They explained some certifications require students to be 18, especially HVAC and programs involving electrical work, but recommended summer bridge programs and phased internships to prepare students until they reach required ages. "If we do decide to do a guaranteed experience that includes dual enrollment, then our students when they turn 18 while they're in high school can currently enroll at Palomar and start their HVAC," a presenter said.
