Forks Middle School highlights parent engagement gains, drops in office referrals

The Quillayute Valley School District board heard a spotlight presentation from Forks Middle School staff on the building's school improvement plan, with a focus on increasing parent involvement and supporting student behavior and academic progress.
Elena, who introduced the school improvement update, said staff administered an optional parent survey at fall conferences and received "over 50" responses, up from about 17 in the spring. "We got over 50 responses, and so I thought that was good," she said, and staff plan to add grade-level identifiers to future surveys so teams can act on grade-specific feedback.
Elena also told the board the school has made substantial reductions in disciplinary referrals after implementing CHAMPS and other behavior interventions. "Last year, we had 537 office referrals," she said, and "this year, we have decreased that by 48%" and reduced the number of students with referrals by about 32%.
On academics, Elena and board members discussed I-Ready fall results and how to interpret them. Board members noted the fall norm typically shows many students a grade level below, and they raised summer learning loss and developmental transitions as contributing factors for cohorts testing below grade. Elena said the school will retest in December and return to the board with fall-to-winter growth comparisons in January.
Board members thanked Elena and the Forks staff for the update and asked that the district bring back the December results for review.
