Lake Shore board adopts 2025-26 budget, sets tax rate and reports 15.8% fund balance

The Lake Shore Board of Education approved a final amended 2024-25 operating budget and adopted the proposed 2025-26 operating budgets for multiple funds at its June 23 meeting.
Shelly Larsen reported the district’s fund balance is at 15.8% while noting the district is uncertain about final state budget figures. Board members asked for clarification about starting and ending balances; Amy Thomas-August questioned how the fiscal year could end at 15.8% after starting with 9.4%, and Larsen responded there are many unknown items and the district is taking a conservative approach because “we don't have final budgets from the state.” The final budget amendment and the 2025-26 budget adoption passed unanimously (Yea:7).
President Kurt Ziegler said the 2025-26 budget is based on current information and that enrollment projections are expected to rise; Superintendent Dr. DiPonio added Lake Shore is one of the few districts in Macomb County with projected enrollment increases. Board members were told the district expects a clearer picture by February when state budget decisions are more settled.
