LCAP update: district highlights attendance gains, flags suspensions and baseline survey work

District teaching-and-learning staff and data leads presented updates to the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) and invited public comment on goals and metrics.
Paul Slaton and colleagues highlighted several items the district will track moving forward and pointed out a notable improvement in targeted attendance: "To see a 79% drop in unexcused absences in this subgroup is fantastic," Slaton said during the presentation. Staff also described that some measures remain at baseline this year because of new survey tools and that suspension rates showed small increases in some subgroups even while classroom-level referrals remained flat.
Public commenters and trustees asked for clearer links in the LCAP between the district's narrative, specific actions and the data, especially disaggregated data for Hispanic students and students with IEPs. Staff described a shift to affinity-based parent engagement and plans to use a new micro-survey tool to gather more frequent, targeted input from families and educators. The public hearing was opened and closed as part of the board's agenda; staff will return with final LCAP adoption materials and a fall session to review metrics and implementation plans.
