Superintendent seeks community education on cannabis, cites $150,000 DNR Passport grant for softball field

Superintendent Adam Bowen told the board the district plans to pursue organized cannabis education for students and parents and is exploring outside funding to cover speaker fees and vape detectors. "With the number of dispensaries established in New Buffalo it is important that we educate our students and parents on this topic," Bowen said, and he reported conversations with Bloomery Cannabis about potential contributions and outreach to other local dispensaries.
Bowen also reported mid-year assessment activity (NWEA, Delta Math and DIBELS) used to guide interventions at the elementary and middle school levels. He said he has been selected as NBARA president and noted that the city accepted a State DNR Passport Grant of $150,000 that will be applied to a city-owned softball field; district and city staff are meeting with architects and considering safety and field-location changes if athletic programs expand.
