Selectmen approve $8,500 state highway safety grant for targeted traffic patrols

The town police chief told the board the grant covers four-hour “grant patrols” focused on DWIs, speed enforcement and distracted driving, and that each four-hour block requires officers to conduct at least 12 vehicle stops. “It’s $8,500 for traffic safety, through Department of Safety,” the chief said, and added the program runs from October through September 2027. The chief also clarified that state citations go to the state, not the town: “They do not go to the town…they go to the state of New Hampshire.”
Board members said the item is a routine annual program, with one selectman noting staffing can limit use of the funds in some years. A motion to accept the grant terms and authorize the town manager to sign was moved and seconded during the meeting; the motion was approved by voice vote.
