Fire committee recommends BCI checks, council keeps background- and driver‑abstract requirements

The Village of Jacksonville Fire Committee recommended June 24 that new-hire screening continue to rely on BCI background checks rather than FBI checks and that the Village not accept hiring documentation from other departments, Fiscal Officer Heather Rockwell reported. The Committee also recommended retaining the requirement for driver's abstracts and leaving the physical-exam requirement to Solicitor Grillo to decide.
Following the report, Councilperson Eric Clift moved to keep background checks and driver's abstracts as requirements for new hires and to require physicals based on the Solicitor’s guidance. The motion passed with Council President Butch Chapman recorded as abstaining because of his fire department membership. The minutes do not specify any change to the documentation process beyond the Committee’s recommendations.
