County proclaims Suicide Prevention Awareness Month; local counselor urges use of 988

Robertson County commissioners on Sept. 16 proclaimed September 2024 as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and heard a presentation from a local counselor about resources and outreach.
Stephanie Evans, a licensed professional counselor with Mydeo Christian Mental Health Services speaking on behalf of the Robertson County Health Council, told commissioners "So when you have a medical emergency, what number do you call? 911." She added: "Well, when someone has a mental health emergency, they can call 988247," and described 988 as a route to trained counselors with services in Spanish and for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Evans also told the commission the health council was recognized as a suicide-prevention champion and recently received a $10,000 grant to support prevention efforts.
The proclamation encourages residents to look for signs of distress among family and friends and to reach out; the mayor and commissioners asked that educational materials be shared with schools, churches and community groups. Evans offered to distribute magnets and training materials and said she would be available after the meeting to provide contact information.
