The Utah State Tax Commission voted unanimously to close a public hearing and approve proposed changes to motor vehicle license-plate fees required by Senate Bill 45, the commission said.
Mike Lee, senior director, explained the changes and tied them to SB45: "These fee changes are a result of, SB45 that was passed last legislative session. The fees are changing for license plates. We're required to issue 1 now instead of 2, and centrally distribute the license plates from a central location." Lee said the move to single-plate issuance and central distribution will mean a mailing fee is charged alongside a plate fee in most circumstances.
Commissioner Michael Craighead moved to close the public hearing and the commission then held a roll call vote; the motion passed unanimously. Chair John Valentine said the fee schedule had been published in the public notice and that the changes will affect plate fees effective 01/01/2025.
The commission did not record any public commenters during the hearing portion. The action taken was procedural: closing the public hearing and approving the presented fee change package for implementation.
