Coburn framed the development as part of a broader strategy to create accessible housing within walking distance of downtown amenities and transit. "Welcome to Southern Side East, a 93 unit affordable housing project for residents 55 and up, making between 23,000 and $60,000 annually," he said.
The city attributed the site selection in part to donated land near Unity Park, and officials said the project advances the GVL 2040 comprehensive-plan goal to increase affordability in new housing. The announcement did not include a projected occupancy date beyond the completion window or a developer name for the East site.
