San Mateo County Board honors volunteers, recognizes Youth Commission liaison

At its May 21, 2025 meeting at the San Mateo County Office of Education, Board President Hugo Torres and Deputy Superintendent Marco Chávez honored volunteer groups and multiple award winners in recognition of National Volunteer Month. The presentation named California Distinguished Schools and California Green Ribbon School awardees, outdoor education cabin leaders, student program award recipients, and other local volunteers.
The Board specifically recognized the 2025 Volunteers from court and community school sites, the Youth Climate Ambassador Program volunteers, the Environmental Youth Leadership Summit volunteers, and leaders of the San Mateo County Tobacco Education Coalition Youth Advisory Group (YAG), including the YAG Leader of the Year. The Board also recognized the 2025 Art Takes a Bus Ride winners and the winners of the 2024 Tobacco Education Coalition public service announcement contest. Deputy Superintendent Marco Chávez introduced the presentation and Board President Hugo Torres presented the honors on behalf of the Board.
Board members additionally recognized Youth Commission Liaison Bethany Zhao for her 2024–2025 service. Zhao attended meetings for the Commission on the Status of Women and Girls and the Youth Advisory Council, and she told the Board the Commission will develop policy proposals on education and workforce development, safety and prevention, and health and access for presentation to state-level stakeholders. The Board recessed for a reception to honor the volunteers and resumed the meeting at 8:16 p.m.
