Commission designates Captain McAfee as acting motor-vehicle enforcement administrator

Commissioners discussed statutory requirements for appointment of the motor-vehicle enforcement division administrator and the need to follow statute when making temporary leadership decisions. The chair explained that the statute currently provides the commission must appoint the administrator who reports to the commission and noted the commission intends to approach the legislature to consider delegating that appointment to the executive director in the future.

To bridge immediate leadership vacancies, the commission voted to designate Captain McAfee as acting motor-vehicle enforcement division administrator for up to six months. During the motion the speaker stated, “I move that the commission designate Captain McAfee as acting MBED administrator for up to 6 months.” The motion passed unanimously on a roll-call vote. The commission and staff said the appointment is temporary while they recruit permanent leadership and that retirements at the top of the enforcement functional area prompted the action.
