Sheriff's office wins $136,484 SCIP grant to fund Community Resource Unit co-responder team

The Lorain County Board of Commissioners accepted reimbursement of $136,484.34 on March 24 for expenditures incurred by the Sheriff's Office in launching a Community Resource Unit (CRU) co-responder program under a SCIP grant.
According to the resolution, the CRU pairs a specially trained deputy with a licensed behavioral-health professional to "Respond in real time to crisis-related 9-1-1 calls;" conduct follow-up visits; link individuals to treatment and social services; and support enrollment in the county Special Needs Registry. The reimbursement covers salary and benefits for the deputy position funded by the State Crisis Intervention Program, plus training, marketing and operational supplies necessary to implement the model.
The board authorized the sheriff to submit required documentation to secure the grant reimbursement; the resolution passed unanimously.
