District proposes $20,000 cannabis-education program; asks new local dispensaries to help fund presentations

Superintendent Adam Bowen outlined a proposal to host two professional cannabis-education presentations, one for students and one for parents, as the district responds to a growing presence of cannabis dispensaries in the community. Bowen said the district currently covers the topic in health classes, through the School Resource Officer and with support from the Berrien County Health Department and SADD, but that professional speakers would strengthen the effort.
"Each presentation is estimated to cost up to $10,000, totaling $20,000 for this initiative," Bowen said, and he noted the district budget cannot cover that amount. Bowen said he hopes newly established cannabis businesses in the community will recognize the value of supporting education and prevention and would be willing to provide financial support. He scheduled a meeting for staff, the SRO and select board members next Tuesday at 7:25 a.m. to explore options.
Board members did not vote on a funding commitment during the meeting; the discussion was presented as a request to identify funding sources and next steps for program design and community outreach.
