New Buffalo Area Schools says district affected by PowerSchool data breach

Superintendent Adam Bowen informed the board on Jan. 13 that New Buffalo Area Schools had been affected by a nationwide PowerSchool data breach. "PowerSchool Data Breach - NBAS has been part of the nationwide data breach that was associated with PowerSchool," Bowen said, and the district has posted a statement online after consulting with Berrien RESA, county superintendents and legal counsel.
Bowen said the district is sharing information it has received so far and will update the community as PowerSchool provides more details. "At this point and time, which is all the information available to share," he said. The board did not take further action at the meeting; officials directed that updates be posted to the district website as they become available.
The statement on the district site, Bowen said, describes the types of data PowerSchool holds — demographic information for students and teachers — but the superintendent did not provide additional specifics about which records were affected or how many individuals may be involved. The district's notification follows coordination with regional education officials and legal counsel.
