Communications and Citizen Engagement Director Rebecca Baumann presented a conceptual plan from Toole Design for 57 Railroad Avenue that would remove the exterior metal skin from part of the building while retaining the steel structural framework, leaving about 10,000 square feet of enclosed building. The concept also envisions creating a connector roadway between First Avenue and Railroad Avenue to improve vehicle and pedestrian connectivity in Old Town and to provide a flexible event space for uses such as a farmers market.
Staff told the board a structural engineer meeting was expected the following week to assess whether the steel framework can be retained once cladding is removed. No formal action was taken; the board expects a timeline concept to return at the next meeting.
