Tax Commission leaders say first full remote meeting went smoothly

Commission leaders on Dec. 19 said the Utah State Tax Commission’s first meeting with all members participating remotely worked as intended and that remote meetings are likely to be used for similarly small agendas in the future.
Commissioner Michael J. Creighton told colleagues: “we have completed our 1st meeting with everybody participating remotely or electronically as our rule provides.” Chair Jonna Valentine said the body expects to use remote sessions when agendas contain only a single action item, noting it was not prudent to require staff and commissioners to convene in person for one short decision.
The comments came during the commissioners’ reports portion of a short meeting that also approved minutes and set an extension for Davis County appeals. Acting deputy/acting executive director Diana Herron told the commission she had no report.
Commissioners did not debate broader rule changes for remote proceedings during this meeting; the remarks recorded were limited to operational observations about the Dec. 19 session.
