City Council’s ADU revisions prompt further public input on short-term rentals and aesthetics

City staff briefed the Planning Commission on proposed accessory dwelling unit (ADU) ordinance changes referred by the City Council and recommended more public engagement before the Commission acts.
Assistant City Manager Braeden Christofferson said Council feedback centered on two issues: whether short-term rentals should be permitted in ADUs and how strictly detached ADUs must match the primary dwelling. Christofferson noted the draft ordinance had removed short-term rental restrictions to allow broader discussion, and clarified that the draft requires detached ADUs to be similar in type and appearance to the primary dwelling to avoid visual incompatibility, while internal ADUs would be exempt from aesthetic requirements.
Staff announced a publicly advertised open house to gather community input prior to returning the ordinance to the Planning Commission and City Council for additional public hearings. Commissioners agreed additional public feedback would be beneficial and signaled interest in revisiting the item after the open house.
