City reports small water-plant fire; staff schedules PLC firmware update and penetration test

Staff reported a small fire at the water treatment plant during routine maintenance when a contractor failed to shut off a valve to a water heater; there was minimal damage and the contractor will pay for repairs and cleaning.
"During routine maintenance at the water treatment plant, a contractor inadvertently failed to shut off a valve to a water heater that resulted in a small fire," staff said, adding there was no structural damage and the contractor is covering repair costs. Staff also said the plant’s PLC firmware has been updated to the most current version and that the city’s IT services will conduct a penetration test to verify system security and identify potential vulnerabilities.
Staff told council that community members should not be alarmed about access to drinking water and that updates are precautionary steps to increase system resilience. The council was also scheduled to discuss budget priorities and a proposed Aug. 31 budget work session.
