Council approves $1,000 sponsorship for Boots and Buckles event

Brinley Holt asked the Vernal City Council to help promote a proposed community event, Boots and Buckles, saying the event would prioritize local vendors and draw out-of-town visitors. "Twenty-five vendors are currently committed, with 127 vendor contracts distributed, and estimated attendance at approximately 2,500 people," Holt told the council.
Council members asked about timing, vendor competition, booth fees and how city funds would be used. Holt said booth rental fees were intended to cover the conference center rental and that the city would be asked to provide only advertising support; she also said vendors had been informed of options to avoid conflicting with other local events.
After discussion that the request fell under the City's miscellaneous sponsorship category and noting the guideline that city contributions generally remain under 25% of an event budget, Councilmember Ed Long moved to approve a $1,000 sponsorship. The motion passed with a roll call vote of Mills, O’Driscoll and Long in favor and Porter voting nay.
The council agreed the contribution aligns with promoting local commerce but directed staff to ensure any future sponsorships follow the city’s criteria and reporting practices. The council later discussed developing a staff-led scoring process for routine sponsorship applications.
