Poulsbo city council on July 1 authorized staff to draft a budget amendment to underwrite up to $21,000 in one‑time seed funding for a community drone show intended to follow the summer concert series.
City Administrator Rob Gelder read the motion asking the council to “direct staff to prepare a budget amendment supported by general fund reserves to underwrite up to 21,000 for the 1 time non precedent setting support of a community driven show,” which councilmembers moved and seconded and approved by consensus.
Mayor Ed and council members framed the decision as a way to keep planning moving while the city seeks private sponsors to cover the production cost. The mayor earlier described the drone element as an alternative to personal fireworks and said the tentative plan would place a demonstration at about 9 p.m. following the concert; “fingers crossed, at approximately 9PM to demonstrate moving forward the viability of a July 4 and other celebrations without the use of fireworks,” he said.
Staff will prepare a formal budget amendment and return to council with the item for review and appropriation. The city emphasized that the $21,000 figure is seed underwriting pending sponsorships and that the authorization does not yet finalize a full contract or event timeline.
