Guilford Metro 9-1-1 team honored for building hands-on training console

Greensboro City honored the team behind a Guilford Metro 9-1-1 training console integration system, naming Jerry Phillips, Mark Shepherd, Robert Catana and Jessica Hutchins as Impact Award winners. Staff said the project repurposed retired dispatch consoles to create a realistic training environment that mirrors the operations floor, improving the transition for new trainees.
A staff member who worked on the project described hands-on contributions from Mark Shepherd, saying, "Mark took all of these apart by himself, loaded them up in a van, and drove them over here." An agency official said the State 9-1-1 Board visited to review the innovations and informed the team the spaces were eligible for designation, which "allowed us access to funding from state 9-1 funds to actually equip each position with live phones and live radios," the official said. Team members encouraged colleagues to help with foundational work and celebrated the recognition.
