Idaho Environmental Coalition briefs commissioners on INL cleanup, calls for local engagement on disposal permit changes

Dana Kirkham, senior director with the Idaho Environmental Coalition, presented an overview of IEC’s role in the Idaho Cleanup Project at the Idaho National Laboratory and its obligations under the Idaho Settlement Agreement. Kirkham said IEC is prime contractor on a $6.4 billion, 10-year contract focused on meeting cleanup milestones and protecting the Snake River Plain Aquifer.
Kirkham outlined historical waste management practices at INL, reported excavation of buried waste is complete and that about 30,000 drums are awaiting shipment for permanent disposal. She noted proposed changes to a New Mexico disposal permit could affect shipment timelines and that a public comment period is open. Kirkham also described IEC’s local economic impact, saying about 189 Jefferson County residents are employed by IEC with an average salary near $120,000, and said IEC may seek community support in future regulatory or settlement discussions.
