Climate Justice Co-Creation Initiative outlines fellows, training and $3 million EPA grant bid

The Collaboration Council, DEP, HHS and community partners presented the Climate Justice Co-Creation Initiative (CJCI), a community-driven program that aims to center frontline communities of color in climate policy and resilience planning. Jane Park of the Collaboration Council said the CJCI grew from a MORE Network letter and that partners include the Department of Environmental Protection, HHS' Latino Health Initiative and several community organizations. The initiative will hire and train paid Climate Justice Fellows from frontline neighborhoods, offer county staff training and pilot collaborative governance models that pair staff and fellows to co-create solutions.
The Collaboration Council said it applied for an EPA Community Change grant requesting $3,000,000 over three years to support CJCI implementation. "We requested $3,000,000 over 3 years," a presenter said, describing the grant request and noting the application was in final merit review. DEP and HHS representatives highlighted health impacts of climate hazards and said proposed training cohorts for staff and fellows would begin in spring; presenters also proposed an information hub to store multilingual community data and make findings accessible to residents, case managers and agencies.
