Sarasota County Schools outlines Summer Break Spot meal program and free sites for children

Chris Parento, host of the Sarasota County Schools podcast, said the episode will focus on the district's summer nutrition offerings as the school year ends and families prepare for summer.
"Hoy vamos a hablar sobre nuestro programa de nutrición de verano y cómo las familias pueden acceder a comidas saludables y de alta calidad para sus hijos durante todo el verano," Parento said, opening the conversation. The podcast brought together the district's food services director and local nonprofit partners to explain how the Summer Break Spot (the state-authorized summer meal service) works.
Sara Dan, director of Food and Nutrition Services for Sarasota County Schools, described the program as a state-authorized opportunity to provide meals to students 18 and under when school is not in session. "El programa de servicio de alimentos de verano, o el programa Summer Break Spot, como le gusta llamarlo al estado de Florida, es una oportunidad para que proporcionemos comidas nutritivas a estudiantes de 18 años o menos cuando no hay clases," she said.
Dan emphasized that families do not need to register to receive meals at participating sites and that meals are intended for students; adults cannot receive the student meals through the program. Families should check the district Food & Nutrition Services webpage for site-specific schedules and any brief pauses in service around holidays.
