Board approves resolution to apply for waiver for educational interpreter certification
Summary

The board voted to adopt Resolution No. 2609 authorizing the county office to apply for a waiver allowing an educational interpreter to be employed while completing the certification exam.
Staff provided the staffing counts: "We have 14 educational interpreter positions. 7 of them are filled with fully certified interpreters. We have 1 person who is serving on what we call a waiver... and then we have 6 vacancies," and explained the waiver process requires a remediation plan with observation and mentoring to help the employee prepare for the certification exam. Trustees asked about training and support; staff described an observation-and-mentoring remediation plan as part of the waiver application.
The chair called a roll-call vote on the resolution; several trustees recorded "Aye" and the motion passed. Staff said the waiver process is used because the certification exam is difficult and recruitment is an ongoing effort.
