The Santa Barbara County Board of Education voted to approve the Santa Barbara County Office of Education (SBCEO) Comprehensive School Safety Plan covering juvenile court and community schools, special education, and early care.
Superintendent Salcedo introduced the plan as the annual safety document the board is asked to review and approve, saying the plan has been "updated to make sure that we're complying with all of the necessary laws, but also wanting to make it very practical for our juvenile court and community schools" and invited a staff member to add details. Staff noted the document includes redacted pages for tactical information and that the plan complements the county office's emergency operations plan.
Board members praised the clarity of the plan and its specific codes intended to reduce miscommunication during emergencies. A trustee who is a nurse said the plan's documented codes "gave clarity to what the emergency was to cut down on cross chatter," and the board moved the item and approved it in a recorded voice vote.
The plan will remain in effect as the county office's annual school-safety framework for the covered programs; staff told the board they would continue monitoring and provide site-level updates as required by law.
