The Lyon County Commission on Sept. 11 adopted the county’s 2026 budget and separately approved a library levy that will exceed the Revenue Neutral Rate.
Controller Dan Williams presented resolutions to exceed the Revenue Neutral Rate for both the county and the county library and opened the proposals for public comment. After residents asked questions during the hearing, the commission adopted Resolution 14-25 to levy a property tax rate exceeding the county’s Revenue Neutral Rate and Resolution 15-25 for the Lyon County Library; both actions passed on 3-0 votes. "Motion: To Adopt Resolution 14-25, a Resolution of the County of Lyon, Kansas to Levy A Property Tax Rate Exceeding The Revenue Neutral Rate," the minutes record.
Commissioners said they reviewed the budget line by line. Commissioner Chris Bartel described this as his first budget process with the county and noted the board had scrutinized each line item; Commissioner Doug Peck emphasized the county’s interest in retaining employees and the investment required for training replacements. The board then approved a motion to adopt the 2026 Lyon County Budget as presented on a 3-0 vote.
The adoption follows public hearings during which the county took questions about the 2026 budget and library levy; the minutes record only that residents asked questions, without specifying those questions or any amendments to the budget. Next procedural steps are the usual publication and filing required for county budgets under state law.
