During the Q&A, a resident asked specifically about a detention pond by their house, noting it was overgrown, had trash and was being used by children. Alex Thompson said the city had received an inspection report recommending the trash be removed and said the likely next step is for the responsible party to follow the inspector's recommendations.
Thompson described enforcement authority when a point source is proven: "If we have a situation where I know 100% this is where it's coming from... Then we have the ability to find 50 to $5,000 a day in our ordinance." He added his preference was to pursue education before heavy enforcement: "My preference isn't to do education through enforcement... I'd like to get more on the education side of things. And then if that... fails... then move forward with enforcement." Board members and the resident discussed expanding outreach to homeowners and businesses to reduce trash and yard waste entering drains.
