Geneva honors Bennett Conkey, dual IHSA sprint champion

Conkey, a Geneva High senior, told the council he prepared for the races while also focusing on football and said the two races left him energized. "I was so close. I was like it was, like, 0.08 of a 2nd," Conkey said, describing his finish in the 100‑meter final. He also confirmed he intends to enroll at the University of Illinois and play football there.
Council members from the dais praised Conkey’s accomplishments and offered local advice about college life and athletics. The council showed announcer video of the state races and highlighted Conkey’s achievement as the first athlete in IHSA history to win both the 100 and 200 in the same meet in Class 3A. The recognition segment included remarks from family and city officials and ended with a community gift and congratulations.
The recognition was ceremonial; no formal council action was required.
