Several Mission Viejo residents raised public-safety and community-conduct concerns during the March 25 public comment period. Carolyn Gatto described a March 12 rally incident in which a sign was stolen and two women were circled by a drone for roughly two minutes, asking the council to ensure a law-enforcement presence at weekly rallies. The sheriff’s representative later clarified that a widely circulated post about a dead body was inaccurate and that the incident was an abandoned encampment.
Other speakers demanded accountability for a school-board trustee who used a racial slur; Peggy O'Neil and Stacy Holmes urged the council to publicly condemn the remarks despite having no direct authority over the school board. Kristen Wilcox raised concerns about a lack of a consistent public police blotter and questioned the city’s use of surveillance tools and ICE-related policing. Council members acknowledged the concerns, asked staff and the chief to prepare information for a future meeting, and said they would seek follow-up from the sheriff’s office and the police about blotter access and public-safety presence at rallies.
