Redmond committee moves to place interlocal inspection agreement with King County Fire District 34 on consent

The Committee of the Whole (Planning & Public Works) moved to place on the Sept. 1 consent agenda a proposed 10-year renewal of an interlocal agreement with King County Fire District 34 that authorizes Redmond personnel to perform annual fire life-safety inspections in that district. A fire department representative told the committee the agreement covers permitted businesses and multifamily complexes and "is about 10% of our workload," and that the contract as written "is working very well for us for the last 10 years."

Council members asked whether the renewal would add inspections or shift workload. Staff clarified this is a renewal of an existing arrangement, not an expansion: Fire District 34 pays the city for personnel time under the contract, so the city is not taking on unplanned additional inspections. Council member Percy asked whether not doing the inspections internally could reduce the city's inspection burden; staff replied the contract is longstanding and that staff do not expect a net capacity gain from changing the arrangement.

Council member Sony raised whether King County could reverse Redmond's rulings under the agreement; staff said King County retains ultimate code authority in the district and that, in the last 10 years, King County has not reversed any Redmond rulings. The Chair asked for objections to placing the renewal on the consent agenda; none were raised and staff confirmed the item will be placed on the Sept. 1 consent calendar.
