Library to move newer microfilm scanner upstairs and use Newspaper Archive for searchable copies

A trustee raised frustration about the library's nonworking microfiche reader; City Librarian Jennifer Baker said volunteers have nearly finished digitizing the film and the library is negotiating an agreement with Newspaper Archive to upload and index the scans so they are searchable online.
Baker said replacing the public ScanPro microfilm scanner would cost about $8,000, which the library does not consider a prudent purchase given project progress. Instead, she said staff will relocate the newer scanner now in the basement upstairs for public use and continue volunteer work on the scanning project. “We will just move that one upstairs,” she said, adding the change could happen within a week or two.
