Sheriff's office: Orange County deputies will not enforce federal immigration law, city told

Captain Jason Ivens read a January 27, 2025 statement from Sheriff Barnes clarifying the sheriff's department's role in immigration enforcement and local policing.
"The Orange County Sheriff's Department does not enforce federal immigration law," Ivens read aloud, saying the department will remain focused on state and local law and will "provide for your safety and respond to your calls for service regardless of your immigration status." The statement said the department will not ask the immigration status of victims, witnesses, suspects or callers.
The statement acknowledged limitations under California Senate Bill 54 and said the department has chosen to "cooperate with ICE to the fullest extent provided by the law in order to prevent serious offenders from returning to the communities they have preyed upon," language Ivens attributed to Sheriff Barnes. Council members and public commenters had sought clarification after prior meetings; the statement was presented to address those concerns.
