Sesser-Valier board adopts initial FY25 budget, accepts FY24 audit in 6–0 vote

The Sesser-Valier Community Unit School District No. 196 Board of Education voted 6–0 on Sept. 16 to approve a consent agenda that included acceptance of the District's Fiscal Year 2024 audit and adoption of the initial Fiscal Year 2025 district budget.
The motion, moved by Kirk and seconded by Spence, also approved minutes of prior meetings, the treasurer's report, bills totaling $493,793.36 and salaries totaling $383,812.56, overnight and out-of-state field trips, authorization for certain facility-use requests including a fee waiver, administrator and teacher compensation reports, and the FY25 Evidence-Based Funding Spending Plan. Superintendent J. Henry presented the budget as an intentionally conservative plan and said a clean-up amendment is typically recommended in spring prior to final adoption in June.
Mr. Henry told the board the initial FY25 budget was prepared using what he described as underestimated revenues and overestimated expenses; he also said an unexpected reduction in estimated FY25 Corporate Personal Property Replacement Tax receipts had negatively affected the plan. Following the board's approval, the FY25 budget will be filed with Franklin and Jefferson counties and with the Illinois State Board of Education.
The vote on the consent agenda was recorded as six yeas (Garner, Kirk, Lance, Menser, Packer, Spence) and zero nays.
