Board approves courses of study for California alternative diploma pathway

Assistant Principal Tori Martinez briefed the board on the California alternative-diploma pathway, explaining it is a legislated option for students who qualify for the California Alternate Assessments. She told trustees the pathway sets state-aligned, modified coursework (for example, 3 years of English, 2 years of math including Algebra I, and 2 years of science) and "allows us that other option for them to earn a diploma."
Martinez said the district is already using Unique Learning Systems (News2You) in ESN classes and that the approved 13 courses formalize a framework for those students. She emphasized that the IEP team and families must opt in and determine eligibility: "It's a legislated requirement, and so we do not have a choice whether or not we offer an alternative pathway." The board moved and approved the course-of-study item by roll call.
