A staff member told the Benicia Arts and Culture Commission that a proposed mural at the city gym cannot proceed because the gym is a historic site, and apologized for not having realized that before presenting the idea. Staff said they have since convened building inspectors, public works and city engineers and asked contractors to provide cost estimates for repairs and installation alternatives at Station 11 and other candidate locations.
The staff member said: "I am very embarrassed as a staff person to not have known all of the information prior bringing it to you, so I apologize to the commission." Commissioners discussed whether a semi‑freestanding installation or alternative sites could reduce costs and maintenance complications. Staff described two contractor-proposed options and said a staff report with cost estimates would be presented in May.
The commission also reviewed a staff-compiled public-art inventory and formed an ad hoc committee (Jeffrey, Neema, and Chris volunteered) to research missing pieces, maintenance histories and cost information so the commission can propose a maintenance funding allocation during budget season. Staff noted maintenance records are incomplete for many pieces and that obligations differ by artwork (some have contracts; others do not).
