Melwood outlines day-program capacity and community activities in Arlington

Taquanda Dixon, director of community support services at Melwood, said Melwood’s Arlington Day Program can “accommodate about 42 people in a day program right now” but that current enrollment sits at around 26–27 participants, leaving roughly 12–14 open slots.
Dixon described Melwood’s mix of center-based and community activities, including a 6-week Kitchen of Purpose culinary cohort that provides participants with chef hats and tools and aims to build independence. She said Melwood uses flexible scheduling so participants can attend two or three days a week and that the program maintains a 1:3 community integration staffing ratio and a 1:7 facility ratio. On partnerships and supports, Dixon noted collaborations with Arlington Aquatics and the Arlington Community Service Board and encouraged families and volunteers to reach out for in-kind donations or to sponsor events. “If you would like to know more about our programming and how to join the Melwood family, please contact Irene Lamba Fomela,” she said.
During questions, Melwood clarified that it could not yet accept people who require staff ratios beyond the established 1:7 pattern without revising staffing; higher-intensity supports would require a different staffing model or intensive-rate contract provisions. A meeting participant also asked about a new Melwood property; a participant in the chat said the new Melwood property will be on 23rd Street in Arlington and Dixon said the day program will move during construction but expects travel distances to remain comparable for families.
