Mayor Steve Young proclaimed April 2025 as National Volunteer Week and invited volunteers forward for recognition at the council meeting.
The presentation noted that 340 volunteers contributed a total of 21,894 hours in 2024; using the Independent Sector’s California hourly valuation of $38.61, the city displayed a symbolic check for $845,337. Patty Woodside, representing the National Volunteer Week Committee, presented the check and thanked volunteers across the police department, fire department, library and parks programs.
Library staff spoke about Marge Hulan’s 18 years of service as an adult literacy tutor, training new tutors and running conversation and writing workshops; she was named a Volunteer of the Year. The council also honored Gail DeMartini for his extensive volunteer work with the police department, including vacation checks, event coverage and work on the vacant-home security-check program.
Mayor Young and council members urged residents to consider board and commission openings and to apply by the posted deadline.
