Selectboard to send audit RFP after rescinding direct forensic-audit motion

The Williamstown Selectboard on Monday agreed to rescind a prior motion that directly sought a forensic financial audit and instead approved issuing a request for proposals to obtain price estimates for both a preliminary audit and a forensic audit if the preliminary work indicates it is necessary.
Selectboard member Tyler Mitchell said his earlier November motion — "I make a motion that the Town of Williamstown does a third-party forensic financial audit from the time Jackie Higgins was hired as Town Manager to December 31, 2025" — needed to be rescinded to allow a properly scoped procurement and public vote. Mitchell said the RFP will be posted to the town website, the VT Bid Registry, and VLCT classifieds; the RFP will be sent to recommended firms on Dec. 9, 2025, and responses will be accepted through 4 p.m. on Jan. 9, 2026, with opening and review at the Jan. 12, 2026 Selectboard meeting.
Town members had consulted two accounting professionals, one identified in the minutes as Sarah LaCroix and a former auditor Bill Yacovone, who recommended a preliminary audit to determine whether a more costly forensic audit is warranted. The board voted to move forward with the RFP process and to present results at Town Meeting and at upcoming Selectboard meetings.
