ECIA to explore offering open-meetings training after new law requires training for new officials

May Hinton told the board that under a new law "all new elected officials have to have the open meetings trainings within 90 days" and said ECIA had been asked whether it could provide that training for member counties. Hinton said the Iowa Public Information Board (IPIB) must approve any curriculum before it can be offered and that ECIA would review sample materials and work with legal counsel to prepare a submission for approval.
Supervisors expressed interest in a locally available training to avoid travel; they also raised practical questions about who would track compliance with the 90-day requirement and how enforcement would work. Hinton said the training requirement is brief (more than one hour but less than two) and that ECIA will continue to consult the Iowa Public Information Board and other associations about rollout and curriculum approval.
