Nate, county conservation staff, told the board that recent storms at Spruce Creek knocked down multiple trees and temporarily closed some sites while crews awaited a bucket truck for cleanup. He said the department prioritized reopening roads and public safety and that the timing around the Fourth had reduced potential visitor exposure: “So, could've been a lot worse if it would've been the week before on the 4th,” Nate said.
Nate said the department received at least one complaint from an individual whose tent was destroyed; he told supervisors that the conservation board discussed the complaint and believed staff had acted fairly under the circumstances. The county will continue cleanup and handle remaining site closures until contractors finish the work.
