The Arlington County Bicycle Advisory Committee reviewed the county's draft multimodal transportation plan and praised its breadth while warning it risks being a long list of ambitions without enforcement. Chair Cynthia Palmer said she read the plan quickly and called it "a good start" but pressed for stronger design standards and more explicit measures to make streets safer as vehicle sizes and speeds increase.
Committee members said the plan contains numerous policies and strategies—Mike summarized the document as having a single vision, seven goals, 22 policies and roughly 147 strategies—but questioned whether so many strategies would give the county actionable leverage. "There's a lot of good stuff in here," Mike said, but "the devil is in the implementation" and he worried the plan as written may lack the "teeth" needed to change project-level decisions.
Members suggested the county convert strategy language into enforceable engineering standards and clearer responsibilities for long-term maintenance. They also urged the county to make advisory bodies part of the implementation and review process so the Bicycle Advisory Committee can provide ongoing validation and project-level input. The committee agreed to compile specific edits and corridor comments for a committee letter and encouraged individuals to submit comments through the county public portal.
