Melwood director says day program maintained community integration and has openings for Arlington participants

Dixon, director of community support services at Melwood, told the committee Melwood continued its day-program activities despite recent snow and ice, and described partnerships and upcoming cohorts. “My name is Dixon, and I'm the director of community support services with Melwood for our day programs,” Dixon said, listing a Kitchen of Purpose culinary cohort and regular outings to libraries, pools and restaurants.

Dixon said Melwood typically serves about 26 participants and estimated that 12 to 13 are from Arlington. He said the facility has vacancies and could expand to as many as 40 participants at that location. Committee members asked about hybrid and supported-employment options; Dixon said programs are person-centered and can combine days in a day program with employment supports when appropriate. “We always can do, if someone wants to work and do employment or individual supported employment or group supported employment, they can always tailor that,” Dixon said.

The committee used the exchange to press providers to emphasize community integration in their monthly reports. Staff also reminded providers that state expectations and county contracts require community-integration outcomes even for center-based programs, and that plans should reflect weekly community options tied to individual support plans. The committee noted weather-related interruptions and encouraged providers to explain contingency plans when vans or sites are disrupted; Melwood described digging vans out after the storm and resuming outings.
