County moves to piggyback state contract for hazardous-waste disposal services

Shelby County staff told commissioners they intend to use a state procurement vehicle to secure contractor services for household hazardous-waste collection and disposal.
At committee, County Engineer Darren Sanders described the item as a companion to the intergovernmental funding ordinance: the resolution approves a piggyback contract with Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. (using the State of Tennessee contract number 88039) for up to $175,000 annually beginning upon execution. Sanders said the state pools quantities for many counties to obtain better pricing and ensure vendor availability for both permanent facilities and special-event dropoffs.
"The state of Tennessee actually bids this for all the counties," Sanders said, adding the piggyback gives the county a contractor and better price than separate procurements. The contract covers regular collection and also supports counties that operate special events.
The committee voted to forward the item with a favorable recommendation to the full commission.
