Residents say new recycling totes spill in wind; city points to Wasatch Integrated resources

Paul Stern of South Weber said the new blue recycling totes scattered trash across Deer Run Drive and Colossex after the first pickup, calling out that lids "flip up easily depending on the direction of the can to the prevailing wind," and that some cans "actually turned over spilling their contents." Stern told the council a neighbor had contacted the tote manufacturer, Toter, and was told a latch that used to be available is no longer made.

Michael Grant of South Deer Run Drive told the council he appreciated the new cans’ labeling but raised practical questions about what materials belong in the tote. "What about a couple of drops of oil from the car?" he asked, and requested clearer guidance on oil-stained cardboard and engine-oil containers. Staff and council members directed residents to Wasatch Integrated’s website and said the recycling facility runs tours and an open house this week to help residents learn what to put in the bin. A council member noted the facility’s online recycling guide specifically addresses motor oil bottles and related items.
